Experiments

I love playing around! I can focus on one thing for a very long time, but at some point I'll be tempted to try something new to keep things fresh. This is a collection of work that fits that idea! Right now I', having lots of fun experimenting with different 3D techniques, and am starting to dip my toes into coding. But tomorrow? Who knows! Maybe I'll take a deep dive into crafting and traditional cutout animation. Maybe I'll experiment with pixilation. The world of art and animation is an enormous place and the possibilities are endless!

Caustics

Some little experiments/proof of concept work for a possible future experimental project. This time I'm looking into caustics effects overlayed on mundane, slice-of-life scenes. The quick tests you see here are made of caustics simulations made with Blender's Cycles renderer, composited on clips from my previous short film (these are placeholders). The idea is to then animate new scenes to replace the placeholders, and see how those can interact with the movement of the effects!  I'd like to experiment with combining more mediums aside from the usual 2D/3D as well, such as recording how light hits certain materials like holographic foil.

Using Unity for the first time

I've always been interested in playing around with Unity, and decided I'd try to work on a short 5 day project to get used to its interface and to dip my toes into coding for the first time! I created the 3D assets in Blender, textured them in a combination of Clip Studio Paint and Blender, and got to work in Unity. The result was a simple interactive piece: click the wheel and watch the frame expand and rotate, revealing a new environment! This was a lot of fun, and taught me some really useful lessons about exporting files to Unity, as well as how things like this are made. Can't wait to experiment more and make more complex scenes!

3D Environment Modelling

As I love combining 2D and 3D elements in my work, I've had lots of opportunities to practise 3D modelling and to experiment with some fun artstyles. Here's a collection of some work that I love!

ARIA

In May of 2022 I collaborated with graphic designer Pim Saenna on the concept for her skin-care brand ARIA. I was tasked with creating 3D models of three packages, representing her branding as accurately as possible, and rendering these as transparent .PNG images so they could be used in promotional material. Pim provided me with a reference image of the bottles, as well as the stickers and lables to be used in the models.

This project was accomplished entirely in Blender, from the modelling to the lighting stage. Images of the renders, as well as the reference photo, are available below. This project gave me the opportunity to experiment with more realistic lighting, which i don't usually do. It was a lot of fun!
